On 1 November 2017 the Community Foundation held its Annual General Meeting at the Customs House in South Shields. The event was kindly supported by Gardiner Richardson.
Over 150 members and guests attended the event which started with a rousing performance by The Twist, a music project at the Twisting Ducks Theatre Company.
Treasurer, Alastair Conn, presented a healthy report of the Community Foundation’s finances. In 2017, the Community Foundation awarded 1,509 grants totalling £6.8m, whilst generating £2.6m in endowments gifts and £3.2m to its annual funds and programmes.
Vice-President at the Community Foundation, Carol Malia DL, chaired a panel discussion, “How can philanthropy better serve communities” featuring opinions from Professor Tony Chapman (Director of Research at St Chad’s College, Durham University), Jo Curry (Vice-Chair of the Community Foundation) and Shuley Alam (Chief Executive of Compact for Race Equality in South Tyneside).
